Minutes of the meeting 5/09/2000 Attendance: [GMB] Grahame Bowland [MST] Anil Sharma [YAK] Ian McKellar [TAZ] Tracey Brown [ANT] Anita Mathers [TRS] James Andrewartha [NTU] Nick Bannon [TIE] Chris Coman [ORU] James Devenish [TOM] Tom Lynch [BRQ] Bryden Quirk [ACK] Luke Slaughter [MTL] Mark Tearle Apologies: [DTA] Leighton Haynes (?) [TDH] David Manchester Meeting opened 6:06pm President's Report: * Did stuff. Nothing UCC related. * Programming Competition was kind of a success. James Hentridge was the only non-standard UCCan. It was fun. We'll probably have another one later. Vice President's Report: * Started a flamewar against self. * Found out what a prole was. * Tried to email someone at Apple - couldn't find any email addresses. [MST] What did I do, Anita? I did something. [ANT] No you didn't. Treasurer's Report: * [YAK] won! That's about it. Well, [YAK] assumes he did, no one else did anything. * Map is good. Secretary's Report: * Quiz Night - Booked Tav for the 6th October. Tav says that we can't start til ~8, but we can get there at ~7:30 to set up and stuff. Will cost $150 for the venue, and we have to be out by midnight. Clashes with Octoberfest - if Leisure or Manics are doing something in the courtyard, the Tav will want security. [GMB] says we should follow up about security and whether we'll have to pay for it. Correspondence Report: * Invoice for AARNet traffic. [YAK] to deal with. Machine Report: * [TRS] broke the rc file on scarlet, so it now attempts to mount NFS before it has network support. [GMB] Oh shit! I just put a UniSFA couch piece in my mouth. * Axlotl has been turned off, we now have a DEC server. * Door - mooneye's hardware is having problems. General Business: *Programming Competition - Was great fun. Ok turn out, approx 10 people. No new members. Thanks to [BEN] and [GMB] for the problem, and to [GMB] for organising it. We spent some money on food and drink, but less than we'd allocated. * Quiz Night - [ANT] has written 2 rounds of 10 questions so far. We'll charge $5 for members, and $8 non-members entry, and will have memberships available on the night. * Sleepout - Keiron and Froggy are doing too much without consultation. Froggy says there is not much happening with PAC, it's currently going through the Guild - the PAC President has resigned, but apparently will be back before the next PAC meeting. What can we spend the $200 grant on? We'll budget for pizza and drinks. The UCC could rent out computers. *general air of amusement* [AHC] might be able to organise PC's if we want them. People can bring their own. * [AHC] is back - he said he'd be interested in giving a presentation to interested UCC members on the Squid re-write etc. Could book a room in CS for an evening, or something. [GMB] will talk to [AHC]. [GMB] to write blurb, [TAZ] to email to CS lists, and [GMB] to try to send to EE. * [MST] would like the room re-arranged. We have more graphical machines, and there's not much room. We can't put any outside the room, as we suffer from random theft of such items. [TDH] suggested lockable racks for the long term. They are ~$2000 each, new - we'd need ~3. We could use them to put machine room machines in freeing up that space. [YAK] moves that we spend $50 on cables and converters, and a keyboard/mouse switch for the machine room. Passed. [MTL] to look around for quotes on racks. * Ross' Auction - Viewing Friday, Auction on Saturday morning. We'd be interested in the storage works bricks, 4gb hdds for up to $100, and 18gb hdds for up to $300. We have ~$4k in the bank, how much would we be willing to contribute towards a good Alpha server? [YAK] $50k max *g* [BEN] arrives. [MST] moves that we spend a max of $500 on bricks. [GMB] Preferably with 4gb hdds. [GMB] moves that we spend $2000 maximum, $1 - 1.5k towards Alpha server (with contributions), and $500 on bricks/hdds if we get the Alpha, or $700 on bricks etc if we don't get an Alpha. [MST] seconds. Passed. * We want the Guild to upgrade to Cat5. We'd be willing to put money towards a switch if necessary. * Monitors - we'll decide what we need next week, after we know the outcome of the auction. * Keys - [MEL] has been dragigng this out for over 8 weeks. [MST] to definately make contact by next week. [BRQ] *rings [MEL]* [MEL] claims she doesn't know where they are. * If [MEL] can't return the keys, we will have to find out how much a replacement set will cost, and charge her for a replacement set. Meeting closed 7:00pm.
