Crowd, when the club is empty-ish - Discussion of tech talks, or the death thereof - [NEO] suggests tech movies instead - [SZM] doesn't think they've been a success - [SAS]: They've been successful, just haven't had much interest - [SZM]: It's hard when the majority of people in the clubroom aren't paying attention to the talk - Recording was an issue [SAS] : Investment Accounts - [DJA] sent an email, saying that under the SOC Affiliation thing the Guild may have control of our money - [MRD] has concerns about whether it is worth it to change (please don't shoot me if this is wrong) - [SAS] to find out more about money from Guild [SAS] : Laser Etching ([XON]: I believe this is to do with the time capsule) - [SAS] has mental detereoration, switching between subjects - [GOZ]: $60 will get us a can of SoMark (?) for spraying, which we can then cut with a laser - A laserrrrrrrr, pew-pew - [SAS]: Do we have a laser? - [GOZ]: The Artifactory has one - [NTU] notes that the Artifactory will have one soon - [GOZ] and [SAS] to talk to Guild person about laser etching [SAS]: Sponsorship - When are people available over the Study Break to hammer out a prospectus? - [NEO]: No preferred date, may be called to work - [SAS]: All of the time - [XON]: ??? - [SZM]: Tentatively all of the time - [GOZ]: When I don't have anything better to do, which would be rare, as contemplating my navel takes precedence - [VAN]: All the time [NTU]: Regarding Tech Talks - There are PLUG talks! - They have good recording, too! - There's a talk this Tuesday on astronomy and distributed processing (BOINC) [NTU]: LCA Registration has opened - Get involved, either sign-up (payment is separate) - Or, you can volunteer (don't have to pay) - [SAS]: UCC was going to volunteer our services - [SZM]: What sort of volunteering? - [SAS]: [*OX] had a big list of possibilities, like demo accounts - [SZM] queries where we can get info - [NTU]: linux.conf.au has some lists at http://linux.conf.au/contact - [SAS]: [*OX] was enthused about it, so we could get him involved - Discussion of how to seperate demo accounts for normal accounts [NTU]: Artifactory AGM - Sunday 21st of September - http://artifactory.org.au/ for more details, if you're interested [CPG]: Atmosphere of the Club ([XON]: Have fun reading) - I'd be interested in a dialogue in putting Windows on all (or more) of the machines - I've spoken to a lot of different people/groups, who suggested bringing it to the meeting - I feel that there's lots of animosity between the different groups/cliques - I don't see any issue with putting Windows on more of the machines - [NTU]: There's a money cost, for licensing - [CPG]: I think UCC has money - [NEO] comments that while we have money, it's been tied-up for future endeavours (like the Investment Account) - [GOZ] comments that if we have Windows machines that can't play games, we'll get lots of complaints - [SZM]: It may seem like dual-booting would work, but Windows would lead to games 99% of the time, and with no Linux machines available, that would lead to less Linux - People who may want to code, and may not want to stop someone from playing a game (due to hostile response), may not want to use it - [CPG]: How about a system to book a computer, and if someone's gaming when you've booked it, then bad luck to them - [NEO]: Initially, there'd be a large amount of resentment towards the system - [GOZ]: Like bookings from 8am to 9pm - [SZM]: We could auto-logout after 3 or so hours, but that would cause even more resentment - [SZM]: I think it's important to protect the interests of the technically-minded people, who would be turned away by all the gaming machines - [SZM]: As an anecdote, back in 2009, when it was more gaming orientated, I avoided it like the plague, people shouted at each other - Holy indentations, Batman, start back from here - [CPG]: I've found that the gamers have been more than friendly - [NEO]: The more we try to replace Windows machines ([GOZ]: Functionally replace, it won't boot into Linux after Windows is on), the less the Linux people who maintain the stuff would be interested - Discussion of when the Linux machines are used - [CPG] has found that whenever he's in, the Linux machines are hardly used - Other people note that it's dependent on what time you're in - [CPG]: If we had more gaming computers, then other people would be happy - People are hovering around the clubroom, just waiting for a computer - Various: There's an issue of balance between Gaming/Technical, people will always want to be in their favour - [SZM]: I disagree that dual-booting will solve our problems, but if our members want more gaming computers, then as a commitee we sort of should listen to their interests - [CPG]: There seems to be lots of conceptions, that may or may not be correct; what about if I did some research? - Other members agree this would be a good idea - Concerns about sampling are brought up - [NEO]: Be careful about when you sample, as that would distort the result - Someone suggests using a webpage - [CPG] thinks that a paper survey would be better, as it would then be people who are in the club, and not at home - Other members raise the point that not all members can be at the club at all times - Discussion of catering towards the gamers, scaring off the people tech people - [BG3]: I've found that those who game don't tend to know about the management side of computers - Discussion of layout of the clubroom - The two machines near the machine-room door, which are there to not block the machine-room door - Consensus that the layout is not the best - Discussion of whether the gamers care about the club - Some think they do, some think they don't - Discussion of costs of machines, 'cause let's face it the majority of Linux machines ain't that good (for gaming) - [CPG]: Another idea, a day or time for no games - [BG3]: It's hard enough to stop people playing games for tech talks - [SAS]: We just need to enforce it - [SZM]: I've had bad experiences from trying to stop gamers, including being hit once - [CPG] to do research into opinions about Gaming/Linux machine composition Meeting closed at 16:52 Current Action Items ---------------------- [SAS] to talk to Guild people about money, in terms of Investment Accounts [XON] to add [WIL] and [CPG] ([CPG]) to tla [NEO] to set up Raspberry Pi for Projector [ODF] to investigate keyboards for the club, mechanical or otherwise [GOZ] to organise purchase of CAT5e cables, up to $30 [NEO] to do snack run [GOZ] to buy IP Camera from XReaper for $60 [SAS] and [GOZ] to talk to "Person" about laster etching (Guild person?)
