One can't help but imagine that Muse are in possession of a set of Marshall Stacks the size of a medium skyscraper, when listening to their sophomore effort, Origin of Symmetry. This album is dominated by a sound best described as "enourmous guitar," a thundering, pounding style which makes you expect your stereo speakers are going to start bleeding at any moment.

All this thunder is accompanied by energetic drumming, and is rounded out by Mathew Bellamy's curious, operatic vocal style. The album does tend to reek of wank from time to time, but it's so chock full of adrenaline pumping energy that it hardly seems to matter. For most Muse fans, it's not really about taking away any kind of genuine message from their music, it's just about rocking out as loudly as possible.

Not to be considered a one style group, however, Muse do try their hand at a few other musical styles here. Thier cover of "Feeling Good" is actually one of the albums standouts, with it's subdued melody and sultry vocals. As for the couple of other softer tracks, it's kind of funny, actually, to listen and sense that there's one of those enourmous guitars waiting in the wings, just itching to start pounding away.

Thankfully, Muse do know where their strengths lay, and 90% of this album consists of that wonderful, completely wanky art-hard-rock. It's a lot of fun, if you try not to read into it too much.
