Boards of Canada's first album, Music Has the Right to Children, was something of a landmark in the electronica scene as one of the first releases to effectively combine ambient, complex electronica with hip hop beats. The album's only real drawback was that, at times, it could come across sounding particularly artificial. Each track's melody tended to consist of the beeps and bops of "traditional" experimantal electronica, the type of sound prominent in groups such as Autechre or Plaid.

On their sophmore effort, Geogaddi, Boards of Canada have managed to develop their sound to the point of being almost completely organic and natural. This is a huge accomplishment, resulting in an album with all the sublime ambience of The Future Sound of London or early Aphex Twin, while combining it with the completely fascinating hip hop beats of their first release.

The music tends to drift along in a manner which can sound deceptively repetitive, with only minor developments in the melody driving the song forward. This helps to aid the idea of the album serving as a soundscape, rather than a collection of songs.

The hip hop component is what makes these drifting compositions completely accessible. The minimalistic, slowly evolving sound of each track is accompanied by baselines and beats which stagger along at a slightly disjointed rhythm. This backing is very catchy, giving the listener the rare combination of dreamy ambient electronica with truly addictive beats.

Geogaddi is quite simply a masterpiece. One of the most fascinating, thoroughly enjoyable electronic albums ever made. Consider it essential listening.
