manduba

  1. Common name for the fish Ageneiosus inermis

How and When This Machine was Obtained

  • Manduba was purchased in early 2005 from eBay (?) by [NTU]
  • The original intention was to get parts for manbo but to keep it 'somewhat usable'

History Prior to Arrival at the UCC

  • ...

UCC History of the Machine

  • We had a faulty CPU, in the process of finding which one, we discovered that manduba (and presumably manbo) will not only post but also run their diagnostic program without RAM (until they run out of CPU cache that is)
  • After we played musical CPUs between the Suns, [DAG] set about netbooting Debian GNU/Linux on it using Manbo to provide the NFS root
  • Was given more ram when we added large quantities of RAM to Manbo
  • Following Manbo's decommissioning, Manduba was stuffed full of the best parts, attached to a disk array, and stowed in a machine room at the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences.

Current Machine Tasks

Current Software Configuration

  • OpenSolaris Nevada build 101

Current Hardware Configuration

  • Sun Enterprise E4000 chassis
  • 12 UltraSparc-II 400MHz CPUs
  • 11.25 GiB of RAM
  • A D1000 disk array containg 30GB of SCSI disks

Future Plans for the Machine

  • Possibly use CPU time to contribute to other projects, Gnome Tinderbox, Seti@home etc

Special Notes

  • Will run without RAM, at least until it has no CPU cache left
  • Sending it a break on a serial console causes it to do just that
  • Currently accessible through an IPsec tunnel on Musundo

Thanks

  • [NTU] (Nick Bannon) for securing the machine and doing stuff
  • [NTU], [TRS] (James Andrewartha), [DAG] (Bernard Blackham) and others for doing hardware related things (finding the dead CPU etc)
  • [DAG] for setting up Debian on it
  • [MSH] (Matt Johnston) for lugging the RAM back from the US
  • [NTU], [TRS], [CAM], [SAF], [VEL], [JCF], [DAA], [MTL], [ZAR], and [AHC] for donating funds for the upgrade projects.
  • [JCF] (James French) and [LGM] (Alex Dawson) for organising the colocation at Arts
  • [DAA] (David Adam) and [PMC] (Patrick Coleman) for lugging it over to Arts
